The task was to design a family house for a publisher‘s family of four with a library with a capacity of 20,000 volumes.
The land is located in Vranov u Brna. In design, it was important for me to translate the element of the library throughout the house and at the same time to maintain a distance between work and personal life. The library is therefore a block inserted into the house. The two masses are connected through transparent walls. These allow views into the library from the residential areas. The entrances are from each floor and one is external to preserve the privacy of the family.
The main motive of the library itself is an open space that offers various refuges. A glass strip running along the entire length of the north side up to the roof ensures the lightness of the premises. The top floor opens up a view of the church landmark.
The effort to create flat surfaces on the slope is evident in the main living area, connected on two opposite sides to terraces of different qualities. The back is shady for privacy and the front is sunny with views. After opening both sliding windows, the exterior and interior will be connected.
The structure of the proposed building is reinforced concrete, the outer shell is a sandwich with inserted thermal insulation. The perimeter walls are 450 mm thick. The house is based on a system of foundation slabs and piles supported by a load-bearing layer. The library building is covered with wooden battens.
