TRANSFORMATIVE STUDIO
2024/25 - 3rd SEMESTER
author | Vanda Košťálová, Adam Maštalíř
supervisors | Ing. arch. Jan Hora, Ing. arch. Georgi Dimitrov
The topic of our studio was the conversion of a textile factory in Jihlava. We pondered over several questions.
How to bring new life into the premises of the Modeta textile factory? How to make it a more attractive and accessible place not only for the residents of Jihlava, but also for visitors to the zoo? How to create a new city living room?
We are bringing a nearby bike path and footpath to the area, creating a new water surface and amphitheater. We tear down unsuitable spaces and thus create a more comprehensible form. We keep the current cover of the building, but the opposite is happening inside.
Accommodation is created in the western tract in the form of module interacting with the main space, where are located three pavilions - the monkey pavilion, the human pavilion and the butterfly tropicarium. The highlight of the pavilion trail is the viewpoint on the chimney and roof garden with cafe. The restaurant, which is opening onto the yard and the zoo, becomes the center of the whole area.
Above it lives the new premises of the directorate.
An educational center serving both the public and the zoo is being built in the eastern part. Modeta‘s stone shop refers to historical production.
An old and silent factory thus becomes a factory of experiences..

MODULAR ACOMODATION
In the western half of the main building, we placed accommodation in the form of modular cells placed in a checkerboard grid on the existing vaults. Access to the accommodation is via a walkway made of scaffolding pipes and coppice. A net overgrown with vegetation is placed along the entire height as a barrier. In the gaps between the cells, a semi private space is created for two cells, from which we enter the accommodation. The space is separated from the float by glass, nets or mesh, depending on its location. We give those people the opportunity to spend the night with a view of one of the pavilions and the city at the same time. You will find yourself in the middle of the action during the day and during the night.
