DAY-CARE CENTER

STUDIO OULU (ERASMUS EXCHANGE)
2025/2026 - 5th SEMESTER

The project is based on a workshop conducted with children, allowing the design to emerge from their perspective as well as from architectural reasoning. The concept integrates basic geometric forms, varied scales, and different spatial heights to encourage natural learning through movement, play, and exploration.

The building is oriented toward the surrounding landscape, creating a strong connection between interior and exterior spaces. Seasonal comfort plays a key role in the design: during periods of extended daylight, the architecture carefully controls direct sunlight to prevent overheating, while in low-light seasons the building is shaped to capture and distribute as much daylight as possible deep into the interior. A north-facing shed roof, controlled openings, and shading elements support this balance.

The spatial organization is structured around three interconnected parts: the day care center, the youth center, and a shared central space. The central double-height hall and dining area function as the main point of connection, while both the day care and youth areas operate independently. Flexible classrooms, smaller retreat spaces, and adaptable open areas allow the interior to support a wide range of activities throughout the day.
